How to Make the Most of a 13-Hour Layover in Abu Dhabi

Layovers are often spent waiting in airport lounges, but sometimes, they’re the perfect opportunity to explore a new destination. On my recent 13-hour layover in Abu Dhabi, I decided to venture out—this time with my mom, so comfort was my top priority. With some planning, it turned into a memorable mini getaway.

If you’re considering stepping out of Abu Dhabi International Airport during your layover, Yas Island is a fantastic option. It’s close to the airport, has plenty to do, and caters to travelers looking for convenience and relaxation. Here’s how my layover unfolded and tips to make the most of yours.

Why Yas Island is Perfect for a Layover

Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island is a hub for entertainment, dining, and relaxation. Located just 10 minutes from the airport, it offers everything from luxury hotels to waterfront promenades, making it an ideal choice for a short stay. It’s compact, walkable, and has free shuttles that connect the major attractions.

For travelers with limited time, Yas Island’s proximity to the airport means you can explore without worrying about missing your flight.

1. Visas: What You Need to Know

Before heading out, you’ll need a transit visa to leave the airport. The process is simple and can be done in advance or upon arrival.

How to Apply for a Transit Visa

  1. Online: Etihad Airways offers an online visa application service if you’re flying with them.
  2. At the Airport: You can apply for a visa upon arrival, though this might take longer.

Cost of Visa

  • 48-hour transit visa: AED 55 (approx. R306) per person.
  • Requirements: Passport (valid for at least 6 months), onward flight ticket, and a passport-sized photo.

2. Where We Stayed: Centro Yas Island

For this layover, I booked a room at Centro Yas Island, a modern and budget-friendly hotel that prioritizes comfort. My main goal was to ensure my mom felt relaxed, and this hotel was the perfect choice.

Why Choose Centro Yas Island?

  • Affordable comfort: The stay cost R2,600, and it was worth every cent for the clean, cozy rooms and excellent service.
  • Convenient location: Everything on Yas Island is either a short walk or a quick shuttle ride away.
  • Amenities: The hotel has a pool, free Wi-Fi, and a relaxing atmosphere—perfect for unwinding during a layover.

3. Getting Around Yas Island

Yas Island is incredibly easy to navigate, with several transport options depending on your preferences and schedule.

From the Airport to Yas Island

  • Taxi:
    • Cost: AED 50–55 (approx. R250) each way.
    • Safe, reliable, and quick
  • Uber:
    • Cost: Similar to taxis.
    • Convenient if you don’t have cash. We opted for Uber to avoid withdrawing money.

Getting Around the Island

  • Free Shuttles: If you’re staying at a Yas Island hotel, you can use their complimentary shuttle service. However, the shuttles run on a fixed schedule, so you’ll need to check if the times align with your plans.
  • Uber: Around 15-20 AED (Approx R80-150)
  • Walk: This area is incredibly safe and walkable. We chose to walk so we can see more places along the way.

4. Exploring Yas Island

After settling in at the hotel, we headed out to explore Yas Island. Here’s how we spent our layover:

Yas Bay Waterfront

Yas Bay was a short walk from Centro Yas Island, making it an easy and relaxing first stop. This stunning promenade is perfect for taking in the views, grabbing a bite to eat, or simply enjoying the vibe.

  • What to Do at Yas Bay:
    • Stroll along the waterfront.
    • Dine at one of the cafes or restaurants.
    • Relax and take in the marina views.

We had a light meal at one of the restaurants along the bay, which cost AED 60–80 (R800) for two people. The food was delicious, and the ambiance made it a memorable experience.

Convenience and Connectivity

Since most attractions on Yas Island are within walking distance, we didn’t need much transport. However, if you’re short on time, using Uber or the free shuttles is a good alternative.

5. How Much Did the Layover Cost?

Here’s a breakdown of the total expenses:
